Strengthening productivity, in other words, comes from setting clearer expectations and building the alignment people need to do their best work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where HR leadership becomes essential: making productivity transparent by defining clear outcomes and the behaviors that drive them, and doing so with employees at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-hr-leaders-must-do-now-to-redefine-productivity\">What HR Leaders Must Do Now to Redefine Productivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Redefining productivity in a hybrid era starts with <strong>transparency<\/strong>\u2014making expectations visible, shared, and grounded in how work actually gets done today. Research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/services\/consulting\/blogs\/human-capital\/measuring-hybrid-and-remote-workforce-productivity.html\">Deloitte<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA2083-1.html\">RAND<\/a> shows that sustainable performance comes from clear outcomes supported by engagement, autonomy, and well-being. To sustain excellence within flexible work arrangements, business leaders must redefine productivity through the following interconnected outcomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Business impact<\/strong> measures the results, quality, and innovation that advance strategic goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration<\/strong> captures how teams connect, share knowledge, and generate new ideas across locations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engagement<\/strong> reflects the energy, focus, and well-being that enable long-term efficiency and effectiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But transparency only works when it\u2019s grounded in employee experience and input. In one mid-size organization we supported, the CEO wanted to make \u201cBoosting Productivity\u201d a top priority for 2026, driven by a lingering belief that performance had never fully recovered post-COVID, even with new tools, hybrid flexibility, and larger teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before introducing any new expectations, leaders needed to understand how these norms would land and what was actually hindering productivity in the day-to-day. With Seramount\u2019s support, they brought roughly 1,000 senior leaders together for an <a href=\"https:\/\/seramount.com\/solutions\/assess360\/\">Employee Voice Session<\/a> to pressure-test a draft of their new \u201cWays of Working That Strengthen Performance.\u201d Leaders were asked directly: <em>What feels clear? What feels unclear? Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/hrreview.co.uk\/hr-news\/strategy-news\/remote-workers-less-likely-to-get-promotions-or-pay-rises\/382278\">research shows<\/a> remote employees remain less likely to be promoted or recognized. Managers must support their employees by communicating expectations, mitigating bias, and maintaining meaningful weekly conversations that anchor performance and well-being. These habits are what create equitable, high-performing hybrid teams\u2014not physical visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-must-be-implemented-in-ways-that-protect-human-engagement\">AI must be implemented in ways that protect human engagement.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can accelerate output, but research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-98385-2.pdf\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2024\/06\/research-using-ai-at-work-makes-us-lonelier-and-less-healthy?ab=at_art_art_pb_1x4_s04\"><em>Harvard Business Review<\/em><\/a> shows it can also dampen employees\u2019 sense of ownership and connection if introduced without intention. HR leaders can guide organizations to adopt AI through structured experimentation, transparent communication, and the reinforcement that AI augments\u2014not replaces\u2014human judgment and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-well-being-must-be-treated-as-a-performance-system-not-a-perk\">Well-being must be treated as a performance system, not a perk.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnout is one of the most expensive drains on productivity. <a href=\"https:\/\/healthyworkcompany.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/state-of-the-global-workplace-2024-key-insights.pdf\">Gallup<\/a> estimates global burnout costs $8.9 trillion annually. <a href=\"https:\/\/seramount.com\/articles\/burnout-is-a-leadership-crisis-why-well-being-is-the-next-business-imperative\/\">Seramount research<\/a> shows burned-out employees are 2.6 times more likely to leave.
