Meanwhile, 88% of staff <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/06\/worker-burnout-thinking-quitting-job-daily\/\">reported feeling burned out<\/a> at least some of the time. Increasingly attuned to this challenge, CHROs are ramping up investments. But in a world of limited resources, they\u2019re asking which are worthy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-link-from-mental-health-to-productivity-cost-and-turnover\"><strong>The Link from Mental Health to Productivity, Cost, and Turnover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Estimates suggest employee mental health challenges cost employers about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/burnout-costs-per-employee\/742192\/\">$5 million per 1,000 employees<\/a> each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations are seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/meditopia.com\/en\/forwork\/articles\/eap-statistics-and-utilization-rates\">higher Employee Assistance Program (EAP) usage<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshmma.com\/us\/insights\/details\/health-care-economics.html\">rising drug costs<\/a> for employee health care. Requests for mental health leave have also skyrocketed, with requests for mental health leave or accommodations <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/13\/worker-mental-health-skyrockets-companies-are-unprepared\/\">increasing by 74%<\/a> in 2024. &nbsp;In addition to its impact on leave, low employee mental health also impacts productivity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellable.co\/blog\/employee-wellness-statistics\/\">Thirty-seven percent of employees<\/a> report that they\u2019ve felt so overwhelmed that it lowers their job performance, and 70% of employees say they are looking for a new job because of burnout. Multiply that by the standard cost of turnover, and this becomes very expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-employer-response\"><strong>The Employer Response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, many companies have increased or plan to invest more in their employee well-being offerings. However, these investments don\u2019t always achieve the desired impact. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/652769\/despite-employer-prioritization-employee-wellbeing-falters.aspx\">Less than a quarter of employees<\/a> strongly agree that their organization cares about their well-being, a sharp decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, even when employers do offer well-being benefits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/workers-dont-know-if-they-have-mental-healthcare-benefits\/741272\/\">employees don\u2019t always know about them or feel that they can use them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, mental health benefits show a large return on investment when done right. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/652769\/despite-employer-prioritization-employee-wellbeing-falters.aspx\">employees who agree that their organization cares about their well-being<\/a> are seven times more likely to recommend their organization and 4.4 times more likely to be engaged at work.
